Janine Antoni uses a
variety of methods in multiple pieces of her art. Personally, some of the
materials she used were a little strange to me. Such as her use of cow hide and
lard to create a molding of herself. There were other techniques of portraying
her message without having to waste quantities of animal. It is one thing to
use an animal as a source of food. However, her use of animals seems almost as unnecessary
as Lady Gaga’s meat dress. She does take the viewpoint of the cow in her photograph
titled 2038. In which she was taking a bath using a cow trough which was also a
bathtub. I found this to be interesting and liked how she was able to put
herself in the cow’s position and allow the animal to almost drink from her. I
also liked how Antoni used her own hair to paint the floor of a room. I am not
sure what she was trying to portray but the design and texture was beautiful.
Also, her use of the chocolate and soap to make a bust of herself puts an
interesting perspective on our current soup project. Antoni doesn’t just
appreciate her artwork for its beauty, she also eats it and bathes herself with
it. She uses strange techniques but I like her project with the soap and
chocolate because it was dynamic and fascinating to see how the forms evolved.
