“The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the 3 dimensional into the miniature that which can be enveloped by the body”

A souvenir is simply a representative of an experience. A souvenir represents something which is bigger than itself.

“Nostalgia can not be sustained without loss”

As people grow older we experience lose and gain. Oftentimes, in order to understand what we have lost, we must lose it. Whether it is someone we love or even the simple wide-eyed wonder of being a child.

“To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy."

A souvenir is something which can be used to remember something. Whether it is an event, place, or person. It is something which is often displayed as a symbol of pride. Such as a traditional African mask on the fireplace, a silk kimono from Japan that can be worn at parties, or a tiger from Asia to have as a pet. Souvenirs are a mental thing. It all depends on the person and what they view as a souvenir.

"Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience"

The Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti
Ghiberti spent 27 years completing these doors. He had labored on these for so long. Making them an  experience for him. Even though these doors are simply objects. Ghiberti would have seen them as an experience for the amount of time and sweet he put into them. He had created a masterpiece which he would look back on as an experience. Even the great Michelangelo had said they were "truly worthy to be the Gates of Paradise".
